New Release: Spare Change EP (Deep Tech / Minimal)

After a year or so of small single releases, some for free download, I’m dropping an EP today. You can pick it up on Bandcamp (3 tracks for $2), or listen below:

The Tracks

Spare Change EP is a deep tech project I’ve had ready to go for awhile, but I hadn’t decided it was time to release it until now. It consists of three brand new originals:

Spare Change (Original Mix) is a quirky minimal house track featuring a bouncing bass and swinging hats. The disjointed feel with the ethereal, psychedelic atmosphere provided by the synths make this one feel like a fever dream – or a psychedelic trip.

Spare Change (Tech Dub Mix) is an alternate mix of the song, and is much more in line with traditional deep tech, with a distinct, hypnotic, dub-style twist.

Finally, Moanin is a dark, deep tech groover with an moderately aggressive, grimy, underground feel.

The Inspiration

I had a great time experimenting in the studio to come up with this small collection of tracks. The unique thing about the Spare Change tracks is the primary sample. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to use for that, so I glanced around the studio.

No inspiration.

I wanted something unexpected to go with the odd bass line I had cooking, so I reached into my pocket for a few coins from earlier that day. I think I had bought a coffee or something. So, I recorded myself playing with the coins – rubbing them together, jangling them in my hands, and finally dropping them on the desk. Turned out to be just the strange choice I was looking for.

Keep an ear out for more new music on the way. I’ll be dropping releases more frequently now that the studio is back up and running (and better than ever)!
