Aftermath

Aftermath is a collection of songs I wrote after a very difficult few of years. Post-COVID woes, relationship disintegration and personal betrayal led me to a really lonely, isolated place. I had stopped maintaining this site, stopped playing and producing music, and fell into a hard, lengthy depression.

And it was just as I began to pull myself out of the worst of my depressive episode, still in isolation, that I put the studio back together and started to play again. Simple play turned into expressions of all the feelings I held, and I pressed record.

I made mistakes in the depths of my depression. Aftermath is about the fallout of those mistakes – where I found myself, and how I picked myself back up again. I had cut off all of my old friends and music contacts. They weren’t real friends anyway. So I found myself alone, save for my close family (whose love and support were crucial), and at the precipice of a major life reset.

Aries Moonbass: Why the New Project?

House music is good and fun, but my musical roots are actually in rock. I started in a punk rock trio with my little brother and best friend in high school.

Even as AudioMunk was starting out, I was performing and recording as a bassist in several bands – from rock to reggae to blues and jam band music. And even a little jazz. You won’t find those releases listed on my original music page – I purposely excluded them because those people are no good and I don’t want to support them.

As a lifelong guitarist, bassist, and singer/songwriter, my love for traditional guitar-driven music has never completely left me. I’ve come to really appreciate well-produced (not over produced) groovy rock/hip hop style music with an electronic flair. To be honest, the reason I bought my first electronic instrument – a Korg Electribe EMX 2 (which is still part of my studio setup) – is because I wanted to make music like Gorillaz.

And so Aries Moonbass is the realization of that original goal. It’s all of my musical influences – from Gorillaz and The Postal Service to Nightmares on Wax and Thievery Corporation – put in a blender and seasoned with my own perspective and life experience. Aftermath is just the first taste – an experiment, just to see if I could pull it off.

I’m pleased with the results. And I hope you dig it too. The second Aries Moonbass release is already in production.

Take care, and thanks for listening and reading!
